Karur stampede: SC orders CBI probe; opposition hails verdict

 



The Supreme Court has directed a CBI investigation into the Karur stampede that claimed many lives, overturning the earlier SIT-led inquiry. A three-member supervisory committee, headed by a retired Supreme Court judge, will oversee the CBI process. Opposition parties including AIADMK, BJP, TVK welcomed the decision, calling it fundamental to fair justice. AIADMK’s Edappadi K. Palaniswami emphasized that an impartial probe is the right of the victims’ families. PMK and BJP also pressed the state government to fully cooperate with the CBI and the monitoring committee. Actor-politician Vijay called for transparency and pledged support to families affected. The ruling DMK government faces pressure to hand over necessary documents and cooperation in the inquiry.The CBI process and oversight by a judicial panel are expected to bring renewed public scrutiny into the tragedy.
