Festive boom in Tamil Nadu fueled by GST cuts and Diwali shopping spree

The Diwali season has sparked a dramatic increase in retail activity across Tamil Nadu, driven by GST reductions, attractive offers, and consumer optimism. Consumers from Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and elsewhere are engaging heavily in both offline and online shopping, especially purchasing electronics, large appliances, and high-value gadgets. E-commerce platforms have recorded record sales in electronics, mobile phones, home appliances, with several brands noting 1.4x year-on-year growth in premium segments. Traditional bazaar markets too are thriving — ethnic wear, sweets, jewelry and festive décor items are seeing sharp spikes in demand. Retailers report that deals like “easy EMI,” bundle discounts, and limited-period offers are pulling more footfall and conversions.Sweets chains such as Adyar Ananda Bhavan note about 20–25 % increase in institutional orders, while newer flavors and packaging are receiving strong traction. The consumer durables and smartphone market in Tamil Nadu this season is estimated to be worth ₹3,000 crore and ₹6,000 crore respectively, reflecting robust sentiment. This surge demonstrates how policy support (like GST cuts) combined with festive psychology can create a potent growth cycle in retail and consumption.
