Chennai, 21 districts lashed by northeast monsoon; IMD issues orange alert

Heavy rainfall has struck Chennai and 21 districts in Tamil Nadu, signaling the possible onset of the northeast monsoon, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD has issued orange alerts for these regions, urging residents and authorities to be prepared for flooding, waterlogging and disruptions. In Chennai, several roads are already waterlogged due to downpours; the regional meteorological centre has flagged key routes to avoid during commutes. Authorities are deploying disaster response teams, preparing drainage clearing, and coordinating with municipal bodies to mitigate damage. With monsoonal systems strengthening, more rain is expected over the next few days across coastal and interior parts of Tamil Nadu. Residents in low-lying areas and along riverbanks especially are advised to be vigilant and not venture into flooded zones. While rains help in water replenishment, excessive precipitation can damage crops, erode soil, disrupt transport and power networks. This weather development underscores the importance of early warning systems and resilient urban planning in Tamil Nadu.
